Hi Komei In 1998, Mirarr senior Traditional Owner Yvonne Margarula led one of Australia’s most significant campaigns to protect sacred land from uranium mining. A quarter of a century on, Jabiluka’s uranium remains in the ground.
Join Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, Environment Centre NT and us to mark this significant moment for First Nations rights and the environmental movement by attending the 25th anniversary celebration this Friday 31 March – online or live in Darwin!
What: 25 year anniversary of the Jabiluka Blockade
Where: streamed live on YouTube or at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, NT Theatrette, Darwin
When: Friday 31 March, 6-7pm ACST (that’s a 4.30pm start in WA; 6pm in NT; 6.30 in QLD; 7pm in SA; 7.30 in NSW, VIC and TAS).Diverse groups came together to support the Mirarr people including UNESCO, the European Parliament and the US Congress. In March 1998 over 5,000 people took part in a non-violent direct action blockade, with more than 500 people arrested – 25 years ago this month.

These powerful collective efforts saw the mining company enter into an agreement with the Mirarr people that Jabiluka would not be developed without their specific consent. This is an important historical moment for all.
Join us from wherever you are this Friday evening to listen to blockade activists, watch unique footage from the time and hear about current opposition and concerns around uranium mining.
We will also look at next steps in the rehabilitation of the former Ranger mine and the transition to a post-mining regional economy.
Against the backdrop of nuclear submarines and pushes for wider nuclear projects, this is an important time to celebrate a major success in our efforts for a nuclear free Australia. Don’t miss it!
